This region lies mostly within the Amazon basin. Lush, tropical, rain forests largely covers it. It includes the states Tocantins, Rondonia, Acre, Amapa, Roraima, Para, and Amazonas. This area is heavily influenced by the original habitants (the indigenous people.) The people who live here today are a mix of Portuguese and Indian. Since most of these immigrants settle near bodies of water, fish is a popular meal in the northern region. Popular fish include the pirarucu, the tambare and the tucunare. Other common foods found in this region are manioc-a root vegetable, peanuts, fish and tropical fruits. Most of the dishes prepared by these people are prepared with herb, roots, and sauces from the local Amazon forest. A popular dish from this area is Vatapá - a spicy, delicious mixture of bread, shrimp, red pepper, ginger, peanuts, coconut milk, palm oil and onions.
